Maria Island ; The original inhabitants were the Puthikwilayti people and members of the Oyster Bay tribe. European explorers came ashore in 1789 and in 1825 50 convicts were bought to the island by English soldiers. The Darlington Probation Station is today the most intact example of a convict probation Station in Australia and one of 11 convict sites recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site.
